Order: An Introduction
The purpose of order is to allow good things to run wild.
Last week, I wrote about Beauty. This week, I’m offering thoughts about Order.
I own and run an organizing business, so it's no surprise that I love bringing order to spaces — it’s so fun and rewarding! I realize that attitude might seem ridiculous to some of you, or even unbelievable. I get it.
I find it almost impossible to believe that anyone could enjoy being a dentist or working with dentists, but I know people who love those jobs. Go figure! We all have our gifts and callings.
And, just like dentistry, getting organized is something everyone needs in life, but not everyone enjoys. My first childhood dentist was terrible, in so many ways. Once we found an excellent dentist, my whole experience with dentistry shifted for the better.
If you think of organizing the way I think of dentists, having the right person working with you is essential. Having the right perspective on Order is vital.
Being organized does not mean living in a home that is rigid, sterile, boring, or impossible to maintain. Having things in order does not stifle creativity or limit what you can do. In fact, it’s exactly the opposite of an inflexible, unimaginative, soulless space.
Order is essential.
However, Order is not the point.
The reason to curate your home is for the effect it will have on you and others, to make possible connection, caring, creating, and celebrating with the people you love. The very parts of life that are most worthwhile.
Decluttering decreases stress and removes obstacles that get in the way of practicing your core values. Ordering what you keep brings you freedom to focus on what is most important, so you don’t just exist, but flourish.
The point of getting organized is not to have a perfect closet, a spotless counter or Instagram-worthy, coordinated toy-room cabinets. Decluttering and ordering your home brings your possessions in alignment with your priorities, and makes sure your things are serving you (and not the other way around!)
Tell me:
What would getting organized allow you to do?
If you had more time, whom would you spend it with?
